PRODUCT
TOCKAY Limewash is a fluid, partially opaque lime putty paint designed for interior use. It is made from marble fat lime aged for deveral years, combined with our mineral and earth pigments. Its specific application technique creates the nuanced and changing limewash effect characteristic of this product.
Particularly suitable for humid rooms — thanks to its high vapor permeability, long-lasting alkalinity, and condensation-resistant surface — this product is ideal for damp environments. It is formulated without synthetic resin binders or artificial pigments such as titanium dioxide (titanium white).

SUBSTRATE REQUIREMENTS
The substrate must be:
- Uniformly dry
- Uniformly absorbent
- Evenly textured
- Solid, clean, dust- and grease-free
- Free from substances that may migrate and stain
Differences in substrate texture and absorbency may result in variations in sheen and, when tinted, visible color irregularities after application.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Since limewash is applied in a very thin layer and remains only partially covering (it always stays slightly translucent like a wash), the substrate must be uniformly smooth or finely textured and white in colour.
The best results are achieved on smoothed surfaces that have been plastered and pre-painted with white TOCKAY Lime Paint.
Substrates may also be prepared with:
- TOCKAY Lime Paint as a base coat
- Smooth lime plaster (0.5 mm lime plaster)
- Fine lime plaster (0.9 mm lime plaster)
For irregular substrates (differences in texture or absorbency), visible repairs, or drywall with only the joints finished, it is necessary to:
- Apply a full skim coat over the entire surface at a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm using either smooth lime plaster (0.5 mm lime
plaster) or fine lime plaster (0.9 mm lime plaster).
BEFORE APPLICATION
- Protect all surfaces that should not be treated.
- Completely remove all loose, glue-based, or powdery paints.
- Thoroughly wash off wallpaper paste residues.
- Carefully brush sandy or dusty surfaces.
- Allow new plasters to dry completely.
- Remove excess binders, sinter layers, concrete release oils, friable areas, algae, moss, and dirt.
Fill cracks and holes using a similar material. - If staining substances bleed through after the first coat has dried, use alum salt to block these stains (test beforehand).
In the presence of mold on mineral substrates, clean using a soda lye solution.
PRIMER / UNDERCOAT
- TOCKAY lime plasters, clay plasters, and other compatible plasters should first be primed with TOCKAY Casein Primer, then pre-painted with white TOCKAY Lime Paint diluted with 5–10% water and applied using a special limewash brush.
- Smooth lime plaster (0.5 mm lime plaster) and fine lime plaster (0.9 mm lime plaster) do not require mandatory pre-treatment with lime paint.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS
- Do not apply below 8 °C / 46 °F.
- Avoid direct sunlight, drafts, dirt contamination, and substrate temperatures below 8 °C /46 °F or above 25 °C / 77 °F.
- Avoid excessively rapid drying.
- Low temperatures or high ambient/structural humidity may increase sheen effects.
GENERAL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
- Stir thoroughly before use.
- Immediately clean paint splashes from adjacent surfaces with water.
- Generally, two (2) coats of limewash are required.
- Limewash must be applied in very thin coats.
- Do not attempt to cover highly contrasting substrates in a single coat: excessively thick applications may cause defects in the finish.
- While wet, the paint is translucent; full coverage develops after drying.
- Stir occasionally during application.
DILUTION
TOCKAY Limewash is ready to use and does not require dilution.
RECOATING AND RENOVATION
TOCKAY Limewash may be recoated with TOCKAY Limewash or TOCKAY Lime Paint.
TINTING / PIGMENTATION
- TOCKAY Limewash can be tinted using the full range of TOCKAY natural dry pigments.
- The final appearance differs from other wall paints in the range and cannot be accurately represented with
standard colour charts. - It is recommended to perform sample tests on an appropriate surface
Indicative values for reproducing the shades from the TOCKAY “Wall Paints & Plasters” colour chart:
- Shade A = approx. 40 g of pigment for 1L of limewash
- Shade B = approx. 20 g of pigment for 1L of limewash
- Shade C = approx. 4 g of pigment for 1L of limewash
Pigments must first be mixed smoothly in a small amount of water before being added to the limewash. Pigments may be freely mixed together.
⚠️ Added pigments may reduce the shelf life of the product. Limewash tinted with ultramarine pigments must be used within 48 hours after mixing.
DRYING TIME
Approximately 4 to 6 hours at a temperature of around 20 °C / 68 °F and 65% relative humidity. Lower temperatures will extend drying time.
